After reading the story, To Be Like the Sun, we discussed shapes that make up a sunflower. Students created painted paper, in the style of Eric Carle, and then cut and collaged to create their sunflower. Finally, tying in a literacy element, they had to write a short poem about sunflowers. My favorite student poem: "Sunflowers are sweet. Sweeter than pie. I don't know how, and I don't know why".
