1st Grade: Kandinsky Improvisations

Students love this lesson!  First we listen to music from all around the world with all different tempos and rhythms: Spanish guitar, Jazz, Classical, African dance, Japanese lyrical, American lullabies, etc. etc. etc. Then I have students draw various types of lines in crayon depending on what they hear.  I demonstrate various lines and tempos prior while listening to music.  There is an excellent book- Can You Hear It? that shows several famous works of art and includes a cd of songs that might go along with each piece.  We also look at a bunch of Kandinsky's improvisations.  After creating lines with crayon, students then use watercolors and paintbrushes to music to go back over their lines.  Finally- we discuss all the different types of musical instruments we heard, and they get to decorate their instruments and glue them on.
