For this project students took a full sheet (9x12) of black construction paper, and went crazy with the chalk pastels, making sure to cover the whole sheet. I told them we wanted the paper to look messy like Jim Dine's hearts (they LOVED getting messy with the chalk). Next I showed them how to fold the paper in half (chalk side in) and draw a half heart on the fold. Then they cut it out to get a full heart. I pre-cut squares of tissue for the background and whipped up some "glue soup" (glue and water). They painted the white paper with glue soup first, placed a few squares down and then painted over them with more glue soup. Finally they glued their heart into the middle. Some students added accordian fold springs behind their heart to make it pop out of the paper.
just saw these on pinterest and i LOVE them! I'm going to do some with my second graders, i promise to link back to your blog :)
