Once they are all sitting in their seats, and everything is put away, I announce and we all cheer and clap, and I write their name on my bulletin board display so I can keep track (see pic below). The prize is a laminated bookmark. Lately I have been making my own bookmarks on http://www.picnik.com/ . With this website you can upload student artwork, and add all kinds of cool fonts (like the picture above). I usually choose several different pieces of artwork, and make several different bookmarks, so students have a choice when picking. You can see I added the students name in a fancy signature. Students love finding out that their artwork was chosen for a bookmark, and students choosing think it's pretty cool when they can pick a bookmark with their friend's art on it. It's a great way to share the art and get the students pumped up about it! Anyways, just thought I'd share. On picnik, just click on "collage" and you can start uploading photos, then you have to click "done" to add text and save.

Art Room: Artist of the Week bookmarks
Just a little example of a successful classroom management strategy I use! Every class I teach, I pick an "artist of the week" for that class. It has to be someone who is working hard, working quietly, helping others, and having a good attitude. I make a big announcement at the end of the class (last three minutes). It's also a great way to get students to clean up quickly and quietly because they all can't wait to find out who the artist of the week is! Can you believe this even works with my 6th graders!? (you gotta hype it up!)

Wow!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and thanks for sharing the site too.
This is a great idea, but I had a hard time navigating through picnik.com. Could you give some pointers on how you made your bookmarks?
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! I'm in my second year of teaching art as well. If you have time check out my blog artmuse67.blogspot.com :)
ReplyDeleteBeth, sorry just getting your message!
ReplyDeleteFirst you need to sign in or register with picnik. 1.)Once you've done that, go back to the home page. 2.)Click on collage at the top of the page. 3.)Upload some photos of student work 4.) For the bookmarks select the template on the left that has four horizontal squares. 5.) Drag your uploaded photos into the squares you'd like them in. 6.) You can play around with the background color by clicking on the little gray box and selecting a new color. 7.)Once you're done adding pics and choosing color click on DONE (top right corner). 8.)Then click on TEXT on the top panel of options. 9.)Play around with adding the text of your choice. 10.) When finished click on SAVE & SHARE.
Hi Kristin!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the great instructions!
Happy New Year!
I love this idea. I'm at a different school second semester, so I may try this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWOW, this is really cool! My students will love this. Thank you! Chris
ReplyDeletehi Kristin!!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I am really fond of your idea,,,
can I ask you if you think if it would be wise for me to implement that in my classroom...
I teach 10 classes for 45 minutes a week each. I would love to implement this but I think I already dont have enough time to get through all my projects....
do you think it would be better if I do an artist of the month in my classes? like 2 students each for a total of 20 ?????
It would be really helpful...

I saw this post a few days ago and I have now made 7 bookmarks on piknik for the "Artist of the Week" program we'll start in the Art room next trimester! I have 14 classes that I see each week so I plan to choose one artist from the whole school each week. I am so excited about it and some of my 4th graders saw the bookmarks on my desk and were immediately interested and enthusiastic! Thank you for sharing this super cool idea! -Heidi
