Clay Tiles

Right now we are busy making ceramic tiles to be hung as a mosaic for our school district office.  I am thinking about doing a similar project and having it hung in our school somewhere.  I rolled out clay slabs, had each student make one mark into the clay, then cut the slab into tiles. After bisque firing, I glazed and fired again.  Here are some of the results.  Once the mosaic is finished I will post some pics! The above glaze is "blue grotto"

(malachite glaze)

(burnished steel glaze)

(copper adventurite glaze)

(canton jade glaze)

  1. Kristin,
Love the tile mural project. Can you tell me how you got all those tiles to dry without any cracks??? What are you drying them on? What kind of clay did you use? I just did a project with tiles and had lots of cracks!! Any tips appreciated! Mary Ann

  2. No problem MaryAnn!
I had them dry on masonite boards that I covered in plastic. (Plastic garbage bag, actually). I also loosely covered the drying tiles with plastic so they could dry slowly and evenly. It took about 4-5 days to dry them. I used red earth clay which was brand new, straight out of the box, so not dry at all. Hope that helps- Good luck!
