3rd Grade: Sea Turtles

We started off looking at tons of images of sea turtles, both photographs and works of art, learning all about these cool creatures and their environment.  I had students close their eyes (with lights out) and imagine that they were swimming deep down in the ocean- I describe various things (seaweed tickling their toes, tropical schools of fish swimming by, etc.) Then, I say- all of a sudden a giant sea turtle swims right pass you!  I have them imagine what it would like close up.  I have them open their eyes and we talk about the shell and scutes, the designs on their flippers and heads, and then we begin to draw.  We used oil pastels with a watercolor wash, sprinkled with salt.

  1. These are great! I really like their close-up and cropped compositions. Your way of shutting off the lights and having them use their imaginations while you described the ocean clearly inspired them.
    Nice job!

  5. I love these. They are very bright and vibrant. Did you have your students use oil pastels first and then use water colors to paint over them? And when do you apply the salt?

  6. I just used regular construction paper for this one. Yes- first light pencil sketch, then oil pastel coloring, then watercolor wash over the top. Salt is applied while watercolor paint is still wet. I encourage making "little puddles" throughout the page and to sprinkle a "little pinch of salt" onto the puddles.

  7. Hi Kristin,
I saw this gorgeous art lesson on your website quite a long time ago and finally got the chance to use it with my Grade 1/2 class the other day. I've put their artworks up on my blog and included a link to your blog: http://mrsbakersartclass.blogspot.com.au/
Thanks so much for the idea- my class loved it!

  8. Thank you for the awesome lesson. Just did it for "Beach Week" at art camp.
Loved drawing the turtle on a separate paper and playing with the arrangement.
Never done that before and it is a great way to get the students to try a different compositions.
