wow those are great! how did you do it? I'm assuming foil and sharpies. I tried something like this with yarn on tag board ("metal embossing") but it didn't really turn out as nice as I had hoped.
Wow! Stunning! Your students were really careful with their sketches. Did you give them a template, or just reference photos? Ironically, I just posted a plan using the same materials. I must say your student's art turned out even better than ours! http://www.k6art.com/2012/05/20/under-the-sea-repousee/
Hi! Sorry I have been bad about blogging details lately as I'm about to have my first baby in 4 weeks!!! This one I had tons of visuals of Egyptian gods and goddesses and had students draw them using a grid to get correct proportions. Once they were done with their grid drawing they taped thei paper directly to the foil and traced over it with a ball point pen (pressing hard) to transfer the image onto the foil. Then using sharpie they colored ther god on the opposite side ( the side where the foil was raised, not indented). Then finally they used a ruler to divide the background into various sections and they had to draw a different pattern in each section with ball point pen on the back and then color again with sharpie on the front. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask q's!
I just came across your blog tonight from pinterest (from the seaturtle pictures) and I cannot even believe this amazing blog. You must be an amazing art teacher. I would have loved you when I was in school. In fact, I would love you as an art teacher now!! All of this stuff looks so fun. :)
Hello, GREAT project and beautiful art! Could you tell me if you put something under the foil when they pressed their relief into it? I am wanting to try this with an art class and am not sure what to put under the foil. Also, did you use the thick thick foil? What kind of foil? Is it thick foil you can buy from a grocery store? I live in a small town so limited on supplies but if it's thick foil from a grocery store I could do. Thank you for sharing! :)
This uses tooling foil, which is much thicker than regular foil. you can get it at misterart.com, dickblick.com, or st louis crafts brand is at amazon.com.
We just completed this Egyptian Art project, with ArtEmboss Amaco Medium Weight Aluminum Metal 9x12. It worked great, making 3-4 projects from it. Make sure when you are ready to etch the metal, that you put thick newspaper, magazine or rubber mat under your work. A wooden tool or hard semi-sharp pencil seems to work fine for etching (i used a cheap old hard colored pencil). We also found that the Bic Mark it Fine point permanent markers flowed much smoother, than the Sharpie, and gave the final product a more painted look. Plus, the Bic's odor is not as strong as the Sharpie. Use ultra fine marker, if you have a more detailed finish. Happy Art Day.
Gorgeous!

ReplyDeletewhat sort of foil is this? It seem too thick to be just aluminium foil. Wouldn't it just rip?
