6th Grade: Frank Stella 3D Collage

For this project, students looked at the work of Frank Stella and his painting styles. We started off looking at this site: http://www.nga.gov/kids/stella/stella1.htm and then I showed a powerpoint of many other pieces by Stella. We spent the first day just painting paper.  Next class, we used french curve stencils, rulers, construction paper, and pieces of cardboard boxes (for 3D effect) and glued everything together.  Lastly, we added lines and patterns with oil pastels.

  1. Beautiful! I teach at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and we have a Stella piece called The Spirit Spout. The children never tire of seeing it and guessing what it is. You have done a fantastic job translating his work for children to create. I might borrow your idea sometime to share! Great job! Love your blog.

  2. Hi! I would love to know more about your protractor art lesson(s). My students also got pretty excited once I showed them your student work samples. Would it be possible for you to share this lesson? Of course I'd be more than happy to purchase it through whatever site you use.
    Thanks!
